Gynecologist Q & A

Which gynecological services are available?

Dr. Asfouri provides a full range of gynecology services for women’s health, including the diagnosis and treatment for:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Menopause
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids and cysts
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

If you receive a diagnosis, he discusses available treatment options and offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical solutions.

What is a well-woman exam?

Dr. Asfouri provides well-woman exams to safeguard your reproductive health and identify potential problems early.

As part of this exam, Dr. Asfouri performs a Pap smear to check for abnormal cells or HPV. He also reviews any concerns you’ve had since your last exam and can schedule a mammogram if you’re over the age of 40 or have a previous history of breast abnormalities.

To ensure your overall health, Dr. Asfouri also provides guidance with:

  • Fitness
  • Nutrition
  • Bone health
  • Weight control
  • Lifestyle choices

What is a Pap smear?

As part of your well-woman exam, Dr. Asfouri performs a Pap smear to screen for precancerous and cancer cells in the cervix. Without treatment, abnormal cell changes can cause cancer. A Pap smear gives Dr. Asfouri the opportunity to treat abnormal cells early and prevent the development of cancer.

All women should have an annual Pap smear unless they’ve undergone a hysterectomy and have no history of abnormal pap results.

Women older than 65 who’ve had three consecutive Pap smears with no strange test results do not require this test unless there are other health conditions to consider. Dr. Asfouri advises you about the need for ongoing gynecological tests when you reach 65.

What is menopause?

Menopause is the phase of life when your periods have completely stopped for at least 12 months. The time leading up to menopause is called perimenopause when your periods become irregular and other symptoms may occur. Perimenopause can last from 1-10 years before menopause.

Symptoms of perimenopause and menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Change in sex drive
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Memory and concentration problems

Dr. Asfouri helps you manage the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause to restore your quality of life. He may suggest one or more of the following treatments:

  • Antidepressants
  • Hormone therapies
  • Low-dose birth control
  • Talk or behavioral therapy

Menopause can be a frustrating, frightening time, and Dr. Asfouri is available to help ease the transition into the next phase of your life.
