Pap Smear Q & A

How often do I need a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a screening test for abnormal or cancer cells in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. Routine tests can identify cancer early for prompt treatment. A Pap smear is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.

Dr. Asfouri often performs this test during your physical exam or regular checkups. He determines how often you need a Pap smear based on several factors:

  • Your age

  • Your medical history

  • Previous abnormal pap tests

He may recommend a Pap smear as part of your annual exam or perform the test every few years.

If you’ve had a hysterectomy, you may not require Pap smears. Dr. Asfouri discusses your medical history to determine when you can safely stop having Pap tests.

What can I expect during a Pap smear?

Dr. Asfouri performs the Pap smear in a comfortable office environment. You lie on the examination table, and a speculum is used  to access your cervix. Typically, a Pap test is not painful, but you may feel some discomfort. If it is your first Pap smear you will be walked through the process step by step to relieve your anxiety. Following the test, you may experience some light spotting.

The test’s results aren’t immediate, so you may have to wait several days for this vital information. Dr. Asfouri contacts you as soon as possible. If the test shows any abnormalities you will be called back for discussing the results.
