One study discovered that revealing male computer mice for one-fifth of their life expectancy to steroid doses equivalent to those taken by human athletes triggered a high frequency of early deathsamong males (and a low number among females). This is particularly problematic because steroid treatments can be fatal, and if male mice are not treated, they develop serious complications such as enlarged prostate or low sperm counts. The World Health Organization is concerned, and will monitor whether these new findings apply to humans. What may help, however, is the discovery that the male mouse is just as susceptible to these steroids as the female. The male mice exposed to steroids develop a condition that renders them infertile — a condition they experience when they are young — which could eventually lead to death. The team found that testosterone, the male hormone responsible for sexual differentiation, is also involved in early mortality in mice. While it hasn't yet been proven that humans can experience testosterone-induced male infertility, an early study reported in November showed that mice can develop sex differences in their brain, which can lead to abnormal sexual behavior. More than half (60 percent) of mice with the male sex-related brain changes died, suggesting that testosterone treatment may be important in the development and progression of premature death in mice. "Toxicity is often overlooked in sex development experiments," says Dr. Piotr M. Jarzyna from the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Zagreb, Yugoslavia, who wrote an editorial accompanying the PNAS paper.
